I grew up in Jersey Side. My dad worked on the base for years until it closed in 1966. I am #7 of a family of 14. I have 3 sisters who married men from the Base and Live in Kansas, Arizona and Toronto.
I was 13 when we left to move to Toront where my Dad (Fred Wil Wiscombe) and my uncle Job went and found work before getting our families to move there .

My dad, Joe Wilson, was stationed in Newfoundland after WWII. He met a woman named Maud Tobin, who he has never forgotten. She married a Navy man and spent many years in West Covina, California. I visited Placentia this past July for the first time since I was 2 years old. My mother, Marietta, was born and raised there, but moved to the States when she met my father on the Naval base. Placentia is the most beautiful place I have ever been, and the people were wonderful.

I was disgusted by the news story relating to the cruelty displayed by those in your community. The story involved the maiming of seagulls for (god forbid) entertainment.
News stories such as this are the type which will give a community a blackeye, in this case deservedly so I am afraid to say.

What a great find my sister Tina made when she found your site. My mom was born and raised in Placentia (Mary Matilda Catherine McGee Allen). My dad was in the Navy and stationed in Argentia between 1950 and 1954 (Dale Francis Allen Jr.). Hello everybody! I´m writing from Placencia de las Armas (Soraluze) in the Basque Country (Spain). In the summer of 2006, I was in Placentia for a short time (hours), because we went to Red Bay (Labrador) in the expedition "Apaizac hobeto". But I didn´t look the basques tombs in the church! What a pity! Can somebody tell me the Names of the Basque people, specially the name of the Corsair of Hendaye?

I lived in this area when I was 3 years old (1951), and my dad served in the U.S. Navy. I have memories of our little house being on stilits and goats underneath. Mom (who was a city woman) has told me many stories of the wonderful neighbors who helped her in trying to adjust to a very different way of life. I was stationed at Argentia Naval Hospital from 1966-1968. A part of me still remains in your area. I visited Placentia and other towns in the area during my tour of duty. I recently ran into an old Navy buddie, who was stationed there the same time. He now lives in Florida, and he too, will always remember Newfoundland. I now live in Michigan, but will always have a place in my heart for Placentia and Argentia. Thanks for the memories.
